From Dance to Dunking: How My Athletic Background Shaped My Journey

People always ask me how I went from being a dancer to training to dunk a basketball. The truth is, dance gave me everything I needed to start this journey — discipline, body control, and explosive movement that translates directly to vertical leap training.

Growing up in Minnesota, I danced for most of my life. It was my passion, my identity, and the thing that taught me what it means to truly commit to something. The hours of practice, the performances, the constant pursuit of perfection — all of that built a foundation that I carry with me every single day in the gym.

When I decided to pursue dunking in 2022 and enrolled in JumpX Training, I quickly realized how much my dance background helped. The coordination, the ability to control my body in the air, the explosiveness from years of jumps and leaps — it all transferred. My trainers noticed it too.

If you’re an athlete thinking about crossing over into a new sport, don’t underestimate what your current training has given you. Every skill builds on the last. Dance made me the dunker I’m becoming today, and I wouldn’t trade that path for anything.
